Overview

Male Proper Name Subject Agreement
When a proper name (like David, John, Sarah) is the subject, the verb defaults to masculine (3ms) conjugation. This is because the system cannot automatically know if a name is male or female.

READING GOAL:
To recognize that proper names use masculine verb forms by default, and understand how to identify when this applies.

The Rule

Default Behavior: All proper names are treated as masculine

Why?

  • Judean verbs require gender agreement
  • System cannot know name gender automatically
  • Male is grammatically "unmarked" in Judean
  • User can override with (f) marker for female names

Examples - Perfect (Past)

EXAMPLE 1
David walked
ื“ื•ื“ ยท ื”ืœืš
walked (3ms) ื”ืœืš ยท David ื“ื•ื“
EXAMPLE 2
Sarah walked
ืฉืจื” ยท ื”ืœืš
walked (3ms - default) ื”ืœืš ยท Sarah ืฉืจื”
Note: Uses male form by default
EXAMPLE 3
John walked
ื™ื•ื—ื ืŸ ยท ื”ืœืš
walked (3ms) ื”ืœืš ยท John ื™ื•ื—ื ืŸ

Male Markers by Tense

Tense Male (3ms) Example
Perfect (past) (no suffix) ื“ื•ื“ ยท ื”ืœืš
Imperfect (present/future) ื™ prefix ื™ื”ืœืš ยท ื“ื•ื“

Examples - Imperfect (Present/Future)

EXAMPLE 4
David walks
ื™ื”ืœืš ยท ื“ื•ื“
David ื“ื•ื“ ยท walks (3ms) ื™ื”ืœืš
EXAMPLE 5
Moses will speak
ื™ื“ื‘ืจ ยท ืžืฉื”
Moses ืžืฉื” ยท will speak (3ms) ื™ื“ื‘ืจ
EXAMPLE 6
Abraham will go
ื™ืœืš ยท ืื‘ืจื”ื
Abraham ืื‘ืจื”ื ยท will go (3ms) ื™ืœืš

Key Points

  • All proper names default to masculine (3ms)
  • Perfect (past): no suffix on verb
  • Imperfect (present/future): ื™ prefix on verb
  • To mark a name as female, add (f) after the name
  • See Lesson 10.6 for Female Proper Name Subject Agreement
