Overview

The Pronoun No Repetition Rule
When a pronoun symbol and verb root share the same first symbol, the pronoun symbol is not written twice. The single symbol does double work as both pronoun and beginning of the verb.

READING GOAL:
To recognize when a single symbol represents BOTH the pronoun AND the beginning of the verb root.

The Rule

When pronoun symbol = first symbol of verb root:

  • The pronoun symbol is not written twice
  • You see ONE symbol doing the work of TWO
  • Context tells you the pronoun is present

This applies to pronoun symbols: א, י, ו, ת, נ

Examples

Example 1
I say
אמר
אמר = to say
א in אמר = I (pronoun)
Expected if repeated: אאמר
Actual: אמר
Example 2
I love
אהב
אהב = to love
א in אהב = I (pronoun)
Expected if repeated: אאהב
Actual: אהב
Example 3
he sits
ישב
ישב = to sit
י in ישב = he (pronoun)
Expected if repeated: יישב
Actual: ישב
Example 4
we say
נאמר
אמר = to say
נ = we (pronoun)
Note: נ and א are different symbols, so both appear

When Symbols Are Different

Example 5
I will speak
אדבר
דבר = to speak
א = I (pronoun)
Result: אדבר (both symbols appear)
Why: Different symbols - no repetition issue
Example 6
he will kill
יקטל
קטל = to kill
י = he (pronoun)
Result: יקטל (both symbols appear)
Why: Different symbols - no repetition issue

Key Points

  • When pronoun symbol = first symbol of verb root, the pronoun symbol is not written twice
  • One symbol does the work of two (pronoun + verb start)
  • Applies to: א, י, ו, ת, נ
  • Other symbols in Judean CAN repeat - this rule is pronoun-specific
  • Context tells you the pronoun is present
