Inflectional Morphology

Inflectional Morphology: The whole system of how free morphemes change their functions and show relationships. In showing this system for various grammar rules, I will introduce inflectional affixes that indicate the changes in free morphemes. The purpose is to show you how Yahudeyth free morphemes express modifications in their words.

Inflectional Affixes are responsible for the free morpheme modifications for various grammar rules.

Inflectional Affix:

  • The specific INFIX, PREFIX or SUFFIX that gets added to the free morpheme to modify it.

The introduction of these grammar rules will be used to show you the inflectional morphology caused by various inflectional affixes and the meaning they express. Yahudeyth free morphemes (root words) indicate a change in number (singular/plural), communicate gender (masculine/feminine), person (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and timing (tense) by using various inflectional affixes. These affixes are markers in the bound morpheme.

Note: During these instances they do not change their part of speech, nor do the inflectional affixes create a new word.

Compare Inflectional Morphology to Derivational Morphology which is used to show change in part of speech and it creates a new word using derivational affixes. Knowing the affixes that cause both inflectional and derivational morphology will allow you to beware a morpheme's change or part of speech.

The language won't seem so "strange" if you know the affixes that modify free morphemes. See Noun Phrases & Verb Phrases to learn about them.

Derivational Morphology

Derivational Morphology: The whole SYSTEM of how new words are created from free morphemes using various placements of affixes. These derivational affixes change the class of the word, as well as its meaning, all the while, retaining a relationship with the original free morpheme from which it came from. This system shows how new free morphemes (words) are created from existing free morphemes (root words).

In showing this system, for various grammar rules, I will introduce derivational affixes that indicate the changes in free morphemes. The purpose is to help you make sense of the language and identify changes in free morphemes so you can know the meaning they are expressing.

Derivational Affix:

  • The specific INFIX, PREFIX or SUFFIX that creates the new word. These affixes are markers in the derived word.
