Overview

The Root of "To Be"
In Judean, the verb "to be" is built from two symbols that reveal what "being" actually means.

KEY DISCOVERY: To BE something is to have THE POSSESSION OF that state!

READING GOAL:
To recognize הי as the root for "to be" and understand how the verb forms are built.

The Root: הי

Symbol Meaning
ה the
י possession of / state of / value of
הי THE POSSESSION OF = TO BE

To BE something is to have THE POSSESSION OF that state!

Present, Past, and Future

Remember from Lesson 11 (Nominal Sentences): In present tense, "to be" is IMPLIED - not written!

Tense English Judean Pattern
PRESENT I am king אני מלך Subject + Noun
"to be" IMPLIED
PAST I was king הייתי מלך הי + pronoun suffix
"to be" WRITTEN
FUTURE I will be king אהיה מלך pronoun prefix + הי + ה
"to be" WRITTEN

Key Insight:

  • Present: Subject + Noun = "X is Y" (to be implied)
  • Past/Future: The הי forms communicate tense - the pronoun clarifies WHO

Examples with Proper Name

Using David as subject:

Tense English Judean Structure
PRESENT David is king דוד מלך S + N
PAST David was king דוד היה מלך S + V + O
FUTURE David will be king דוד יהיה מלך S + V + O

Without the proper name (pronoun in verb):

See Lesson 10.7 (Subject Clarification Rule) - the pronoun is built into the verb!

Tense English Judean Structure
PAST he was king היה מלך V + O (S in verb)
FUTURE he will be king יהיה מלך V + O (S in verb)

Both are still SVSO - the subject is inside the verb as a pronoun!

Past Tense: Pronoun Suffixes

The pronoun comes AFTER the root הי. The י connects as "of".

English Suffix + הי = Complete Form
I was יתי + הי = הייתי
you (m) was ית + הי = היית
you (f) was ית + הי = היית
he was ה + הי = היה
she was תה + הי = היתה
we were ינו + הי = היינו
you (m.pl) were יתם + הי = הייתם
you (f.pl) were יתן + הי = הייתן
they were ו + הי = היו

Future Tense: Pronoun Prefixes

The pronoun comes BEFORE the root הי, and ה (descriptive marker) comes at the end.

English Prefix + הי + Suffix = Complete Form
I will be א + הי + ה = אהיה
you (m) will be ת + הי + ה = תהיה
you (f) will be ת + הי + י = תהיי
he will be י + הי + ה = יהיה
she will be ת + הי + ה = תהיה
we will be נ + הי + ה = נהיה
you (m.pl) will be ת + הי + ו = תהיו
they (m) will be י + הי + ו = יהיו

Why היה Doesn't Work as the Root

Traditional grammar says the root is היה - but that creates problems!

Form Traditional (היה + suffix) Problem
הייתי היה + תי Where did the extra י come from?
היית היה + ת Where did the extra י come from?
הייתם היה + תם Where did the extra י come from?

With הי as the root - everything is clean:

Form Real Pattern (הי + suffix) Clean?
הייתי הי + יתי
היית הי + ית
היה הי + ה
אהיה א + הי + ה
יהיה י + הי + ה
תהיה ת + הי + ה
נהיה נ + הי + ה

Key Points

  • הי is the root for "to be" - not היה
  • ה = the (descriptive marker)
  • י = possession of / state of / value of
  • To BE = to have THE POSSESSION OF a state
  • Present tense: "to be" is IMPLIED - just Subject + Noun
  • Past/Future: "to be" is WRITTEN - הי forms communicate tense
  • The י in the pronoun suffix shows "of" - connecting the state to the person
